I found out that my cat had recently produced a video titled ‘my five tips on how to get more food’. Watch it here. In the video he explains his tactics to get a human to give a cat more food, these are exactly what he does, and I end up giving him more food as a result.
My cat not only produces its own videos, can seem to be rude as well. It will sit there looking at people with its tongue out. If you would like to see the rude cat cat wall art, take a look.
His blatant disregard for social norms and its complete indifference to me, got me thinking to how these traits have made people think about cats throughout history. More specifically, cats and halloween.
Why are black cats associated with Halloween?
Okay, we all know Salem from Sabrina, who was her familiar ( a creature that assists a witch) but is seems black cats have always been associated with superstitions, perhaps going all the way back to ancient Egypt. Cats back then were considered to be divine symbols. In Greek mythology, the goddess of magic, the moon, sorcery and witchcraft was called Hecate, and had a cat as a familiar and a pet. Black cat's link to witchcraft can be linked back to the 13th century in Europe, when the Pope Gregory IX in 1233 mentioned in a document "Vox in Rama" that they were the incarnation of Satan.
Why black cats became more linked to witches may be a more practical reason, they might have been better at hunting mice since they were darker and could not be seen. In medieval Europe it was also believed that a witch could take the form of their familiar, or a black cat, and this may be the cause of the superstition that it is unlucky to cross the path of a black cat.
